Review

Morley Nelson has devoted most of his eighty-plus years to the conservation of birds of prey. A master falconer and gifted filmmaker, he has worked to educate sportsmen, politicians, leaders of industry and the general public about the important role eagles, hawks and falcons play in the world's ecosystem. In scores of speeches with an eagle on his fist, he quashed centuries-old myths that portrayed raptors as wanton killers. Nelson was instrumental in the campaign to establish the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, one of the largest concentrations of raptors in the world. He worked on seven Disney pictures and numerous national TV specials with his trained eagles and falcons, and he crafted solutions to resolve raptor-electrocution problems nationwide.
Nelson's work has put him on a first name basis with Hollywood studio heads and celebrities, Arab sheiks, state and federal officials and the nation's leading conservationists.
Nelson's story goes far beyond his campaign for birds of prey. A member of Tom Brokow's Greatest Generation, he was seriously wounded while serving with the famed 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II. He won the Silver Star for valor and the respect of the men in his command. Cool North Wind is the story of a man who has lived life to the fullest.
